If you’re not ready to make the jump to a digital SLR just yet the new FinePix S8000fd model from Fujifilm is a good compromise when it comes to a point and shoot camera. While it might look like an SLR it actually has a non-swappable fixed lens but to compensate it’s also the first fixed lens in the industry to offer an impressive 18X optical zoom.

And of course when you’re zoomed in that much even the slightest movements of the camera in your hand will translate to a blurry photo so the S8000fd has a couple of ways to avoid that. The first is the ability to boost the ISO settings to 1600 while still taking advantage of the camera’s full 8MP sensor. This then allows you to increase your shutter speed while still maintaining proper exposure. And you can boost that even further to ISO 3200 or 6400 but you’ll be limited to only 4MP images. The second option is the camera’s ‘Dual Image Stabilization‘ system which is a combination of mechanical sensor shift stabilization along with ISO and shutter speed tricks. I’m sure they work well enough but you might want to consider picking up a nice tripod or monopod if you plan on extensively using the camera’s zoom features.

The Fujifulm FinePix S8000fd should be available in September of this year for the very reasonable price of $399.95.
